Get the room's length and width before anything else. Every other decision, especially rug size, storage, and whether a futon fits, depends on those two numbers. Starting from a mood board instead is what causes returns.

Start with the open floor left after the built-in furniture, then the usable length of each wall, the ceiling height, the under-bed clearance, the window size, and the door width. The open floor and under-bed clearance drive the most buying decisions, from rug size to storage bins.

For most furnished singles and doubles, a 5-by-7 rug fits the open floor better than a larger size, because the bed, desk, and dresser cover a big share of the room. Measure the clear floor and tape out the rectangle before buying.

Use school colors as roughly ten percent of the room, an accent rather than the whole palette. One pennant or flag and an accent pillow in your colors reads as pride, while wall-to-wall logos read as a gift shop.

Less than you think. The typical double is 15 × 12 ft, about 180 square feet, and once two beds, desks and dressers are in, about 109 square feet of open floor is left, roughly 55 each. A typical single is about 126 square feet. Pack for that, not for your bedroom at home.

The most commonly forgotten items are a UL-listed surge protector, a mattress topper, a mattress protector, command strips, a drying rack, a step stool for lofted beds, and a small sick-week kit with a thermometer and pain reliever. None are exciting, and all get used within the first month.

Skip candles, halogen lamps, and most hot plates and toasters, which are banned in many halls for fire safety. Basic power strips without surge protection are often prohibited too. Check your housing guide before buying anything with a heating element or an open flame.

No. One Pro owner can host one active shared workspace with up to four people, including the owner. Invited friends join free with editing or comment access. The host's Pro access applies only inside that shared room.

No. Generation uses design credits. Saving, manual edits, switching views, and invitations use no credits. Guests cannot spend the room owner's generation credits.

Workspaces require sign-in and membership. Invitations are emailed and tied to that recipient's verified email address. Each pending invitation reserves one of four places for seven days. The owner can cancel it at any time. A forwarded link cannot be used by another account.

Yes. A Pro host's shared workspace shows online and away status and named cursors in the room. Room cursors follow the same floor location across different zoom levels and 2D or 3D views. Live presence requires an active connection.

Yes. Select it and choose Comment on selected. Open conversations appear as pins on the piece. Roommates can reply, resolve their own threads and revisit resolved notes. Owners and editors can also resolve other threads. You can comment on products, the whole room and kept layouts too.

No. Live cursors and comments work without voice. When Room voice is available, you can join to listen with your microphone off. Turning it on requires your explicit action and browser permission. You can mute or leave at any time. dormscape does not record or transcribe the call.

Live updates notify connected roommates when a change is saved, with periodic refresh as a fallback. Each save checks the current room version. If someone saved a newer version, your edits are not silently written over theirs. You can keep your changes in a personal copy or load the latest shared room. Simultaneous edits are not automatically merged.

Yes. If your school or room isn't listed yet, use 2D drawing to trace your floor plan, add doors, windows, and closets, and then choose a vibe and budget. 2D drawing is included with Plus and Pro. Pro also includes the 3D Room Builder for constructing a room directly on a 3D grid.

Yes. The drawing tool supports rectilinear outlines, so L-shapes, alcoves, notches, and other non-rectangular rooms are fine. When you draw an irregular room, dormscape places furniture against your actual walls instead of dropping in a rectangular template, so the layout fits the real shape.

You tap to place corners and the walls snap square and to a six-inch grid, with a live feet-and-inches label on each wall. You drop fixed-size doors and windows onto the walls and slide them to position, add resizable closets, then tap Plan this room to continue into styling and budget.

Yes. A drawn room saves to your account with its full geometry. To plan it again with a different vibe or budget, start a new plan and pick it from Reuse a room you drew, no need to redraw it. Each plan counts toward your design limit the same as any other room.

An unfinished builder draft is kept in this browser on this device, separately for your signed-in account. It is not a cloud save or a cross-device backup. After furnishing the room, use Save design in the planner to keep a named design in your account. Clearing browser storage can remove an unfinished draft.

No. Enter measurements from your real room. Default room shapes, ceiling heights, and openings are starting points, not verified building data. The preview is a planning aid, not an architectural drawing, building-permit document, or guarantee of furniture clearance.

Yes. Trace the perimeter corner by corner, or start with an L-shaped room and move its corners. Angled walls and alcoves are supported as part of one closed, non-crossing outline.

The builder checks that every opening still fits on its wall and does not overlap another opening. If the change would break that fit, the edit is rejected. Move, resize, or remove the opening first, then change the wall.

Yes. Select a corner in the room or Room elements list and enter its X and Z position in feet. Openings have wall, width, and distance-from-wall-start fields. You can enter a rectangular floor's length and width directly too.

Yes. Live 3D Room Studio is available with dormscape Pro. Open a room plan and choose 3D room. Free, Flex, and Plus include the 2D editor; interactive 3D requires Pro.

No. Switching views does not generate another design or use a plan credit. Both views use the same furniture layout. Pro includes 10 plan credits.

A public saved-design link shows a 2D snapshot; Pro viewers can explore it in 3D. Private workspace invitations are different: members of a Pro-hosted room can explore its 3D view and collaborate according to their editing or comment role, without a personal Pro purchase.

No. Models represent approximate furniture shapes and dimensions. Check the selected product's photos and actual measurements before buying. Room heights and furniture heights may use defaults until you enter measured values.

The studio offers Open 2D plan if WebGL is unavailable or interrupted. Your existing room layout remains editable in 2D. You can retry 3D on a supported browser.

Select an item from Arrange or the room, then choose Move selected. Drag the piece to its new position. Use the position fields for precise placement, or Undo to reverse a move.

Yes. They use the same furniture positions and room outline. A move or rotation in one view appears in the other. Switching views does not generate a new design.

No. Room finishes, preview colors, and lighting are visualization settings. Shop retains your selected products and prices; product swaps are a separate action.

Yes. Draw your room's outline first, then generate the plan. Pro can view and arrange that same outline in 3D. Confirm the real wall and furniture measurements before relying on the preview.
