About this tool
How Hall Finder works
Hall Finder ranks a school’s residence halls by the weekly walk to class. Pick a school, add the buildings where classes meet and the days of the week for each, and it lists the halls from the shortest week of walking to the longest, with the walking routes on a map.
- Add classes. Upload a schedule or search the school’s buildings, libraries, gyms and dining halls.
- Pick the days. Choose which weekdays each place is visited.
- Rank the halls. The shortest weekly walk comes first.
Where it works
| School | Halls ranked | Campus places | Data built |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arizona State University | 8 | 72 | October 24, 2026 |
| Columbia University | 11 | 42 | October 24, 2026 |
| The Pennsylvania State University (University Park) | 59 | 230 | October 24, 2026 |
| University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) | 16 | 83 | October 24, 2026 |
| University of Florida | 24 | 228 | October 24, 2026 |
Campus places are the classroom buildings, libraries, gyms and dining halls a class or a meal can be added from. A school can list more halls than it ranks; a hall with no spot on the map cannot be ranked.
How the walking time is counted
Walks follow real paths and sidewalks from OpenStreetMap, door to door, at an average walking pace of about 3 mph. A hall’s weekly walk is, for every place, the days visited times the one-way minutes times two. Buses, waiting at crossings and the order of classes are not counted. The details are on how we measure, and each school’s page lists its sources.
Questions about Hall Finder
- What is Hall Finder?
- Hall Finder ranks a school's residence halls by how far you would walk to class each week. You add the buildings your classes are in and the days you go; it adds up every hall's walk there and back and lists the halls from the shortest week to the longest, with the walking routes on a map.
- Which schools does Hall Finder work at?
- Arizona State, Columbia University, Penn State, UCLA and University of Florida. Together that is 118 ranked residence halls. More schools are being added, and every school on dormscape still has its room sizes and a room planner.
- Is Hall Finder free?
- Adding places is free for everyone. A free account shows your #1 hall, its weekly walk and one walking route. Plus ($4.99 once) and Pro ($14.99 once) rank every hall, show every route, compare two halls side by side, and let you save and share setups.
- Does Hall Finder guarantee I get the hall it ranks first?
- No. Most schools assign rooms, so Hall Finder helps you rank your housing preferences with real walking times. It does not affect your school's housing assignment.
