About this tool
How the UCLA Hall Finder works
Hall Finder ranks 16 UCLA residence halls by the weekly walk to class. Add the buildings where classes meet and the days of the week for each. It adds up every hall's walk there and back, then lists the halls from the shortest week of walking to the longest, with the walking routes on a map.
- Add classes. Upload an .ics calendar, a screenshot or a PDF of the schedule, or search 83 campus places (classroom buildings, libraries, gyms and dining halls) by name or building code.
- Pick the days. Choose which weekdays each place is visited.
- Rank the halls. The shortest weekly walk comes first. Pick a hall to see each route and its minutes.

How the walking time is counted
Walks follow real paths and sidewalks from OpenStreetMap, door to door, at an average walking pace of about 3 mph. A hall’s weekly walk is, for every place, the days visited times the one-way minutes times two. Buses, waiting at crossings and the order of classes are not counted, so treat the result as a fair way to compare halls rather than a stopwatch. The details are on how we measure.
Where the data comes from
Walking data for UCLA was last built on October 24, 2026 from these sources.
- © OpenStreetMap contributors: building names, footprints and entrances; the walking network (ODbL-1.0)
- UCLA Registrar, Building List (abbreviations used in the Schedule of Classes): building codes
- UCLA Housing: building types offered to new students, and returners may select from all on-campus options: first-year and upper-year tags (each hall's yearSource)
Where those sources had gaps, a few building locations, codes and first-year tags were set by hand.
Questions about Hall Finder at UCLA
- How do I find the UCLA dorm closest to my classes?
- Open Hall Finder, add the buildings where your classes meet and the days you go to each, then rank. Hall Finder adds up each hall's walk to those buildings, there and back, for every class day, and lists the UCLA halls from the shortest week of walking to the longest.
- Which UCLA residence halls does Hall Finder rank?
- 16 UCLA residence halls. Each one links to its own page with room sizes and a floor plan.
- Can I upload my UCLA class schedule?
- Yes. Upload an .ics calendar file, or a screenshot or PDF of your weekly schedule. An .ics file is read in your browser and never sent to us. A screenshot or PDF needs a free account; it is read to find class buildings and days, and the file is not stored. You check what was read before anything is added.

- Adding places is free for everyone. A free account shows your #1 hall, its weekly walk, the minutes to each place and one walking route. Plus ($4.99 once) and Pro ($14.99 once) rank every hall, show every route, compare two halls side by side, and let you save and share setups.
- Does Hall Finder guarantee I get the hall it ranks first?
- No. Most schools assign rooms, so Hall Finder helps you rank your housing preferences with real walking times. It does not affect your school's housing assignment.
